What Is The Gift of Discernment?
The gift of discernment is one of the most important gifts that you can have as a christian. The gift of discernment is being able to see through the physical in front of you and you see things through spiritual lenses. Discernment is a gift given by the Holy Spirit that allows you to see the true intentions behind a person, message, place or agenda. In a world where the devil is real along with Satan influencing some people, this gift is critical. The gift of discernment oftentimes can be the difference between life or death for some people. Today, we will dive into the gift of discernment and how critical it is in a follower of God’s life.
Discernment in Today’s World
In a world where we will encounter different types of people, discernment is so critical these days. You may encounter someone whose intentions may be different from what they seem. Not everyone who smiles in your face is always your friend as even the word of God makes it clear that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2nd Corinthians 11:14). A person who has bad intentions won’t always come up to you to announce their hidden agenda at hand. They may approach you in an innocent manner.
The gift of discernment helps you identify the person’s agenda at hand as we live in a world where some people are deceitful. For example, a woman might be approached by a man who is charming but he might just want to use her for sex. A man might see a beautiful woman who keeps smiling at him but she might have hidden intentions of setting him up to be robbed. The gift of discernment helps you to identify the hidden motive at hand.
Think about how many lives that were lost that could have been prevented had more people had discernment. When you see articles on the news like a woman who dies from gun violence at the hands of her partner, think about what if she had the gift of discernment. She could have seen the spirit of murder in that man to run away to save her life. Discernment is a gift that is mandatory in your walk with God.
Flesh vs Blood: Where Discernment Is Critical
We do not wrestle with flesh and blood but against principalities and spiritual wickedness is a scripture that highlights the importance of discernment. The gift of discernment is critical because not everything that glitters is gold. There are people whose appearance looks different than the spirit that they may be carrying on the inside.
For example, a man might be 6 feet, make 6 figures and be found attractive by many women but he might be carrying a spirit of anger where he might end up abusing a woman. A woman might be physically beautiful and nice but she might carry a spirit of jealousy where she is always accusing her partner of cheating on her with no evidence.
You cannot judge someone based on physical appearance as many people are not who they say they are. What someone’s outside appearance might show, their spirit underneath may be different. When we read many news articles or watch news, we have seen people who looked nice or attractive end up being murderers, abusers, sex offenders etc.
Many people often end up in bad situations as they only watch a person’s physical appearance but they do not pay attention to the red flags. The gift of discernment is necessary as the devil will send people your way pretending to love you, be your friend or get information out of you in a nice manner.

When You Feel Bad Vibes/Red Flags
Sometimes, many people have the gift of discernment given to them from birth by God. Some people are born with the gift of discernment but sometimes people neglect the bad vibes that their spirit is picking up from someone. For example, a woman may meet a man who is nice and charming but she might feel bad vibes around him like something is off. A man may meet a woman who is nice but he gets an eerie feeling when he looks at her.
Oftentimes, this is the Holy Spirit that is letting you know that something is off about this person and to be watchful or even remove yourself. There have been many people who saw red flags in someone like a partner or a friend and they often end up paying the price for it. Some people end up getting hurt physically, mentally, emotionally or even lost their lives.
Many times, God is warning people but they neglect the warning sometimes in pursuit of the idea that they are just overexaggerating themselves. Do not be deceived as we live in a world where some people are truly wicked and Satan will send some people to try to destroy your life. A person may smile in your face but their eyes may tell a different story.
Discernment In Friendships/Marriage
Friendship and marriage are two critical areas where the gift of discernment is highly important. Your friends can either help or destroy your future and let us not even talk about marriage as who you marry is a serious commitment. We see in the real world about the dangers of marrying the wrong person or befriending the wrong person.
We see on the news sometimes about how a couple was married for 20 years now the husband takes her life and then his life right after. We see how a person can be best friends with someone for 20 years and now their best friend sets them up to get robbed or killed. When you evaluate someone, always test their spirit first when you meet them.
Imagine a woman marrying a man she finds attractive but he has the spirit of murder on him. Imagine a man marrying a woman who is attractive but she has the spirit of lust on her where she cheats behind her husband’s back with other men. Imagine a woman being best friends with another woman for 8 years but behind her back, her friend is setting her up to get robbed because she has a nice car.

How To Strengthen Your DIscernment
Some people are given the gift of discernment by God from birth but there are ways for anyone to strengthen their discernment. One way is to read your bible as the word of God gives knowledge on identifying certain traits in people. The word of God like the book of Proverbs for example tells a man to stay away from an angry woman (Proverbs 21:19) for instance. The word of God gives tips on identifying the different spirits a person may carry.
Another way is fasting and prayer as fasting helps you to draw closer to God. Fasting weakens the flesh while prayer strengthens your relationship with God. God will unlock the supernatural realm helping you to see people’s hidden motives. Fasting and prayer will bring you in the spirit to help you with what God sees.
Previous experiences can also help you to help discern people. For example, if a woman met numerous men before who said they love her but they want sex before marriage, she can easily recognize that this is a spirit of lust inside this man. Previous experiences can help you to learn certain characteristics to look for and what type of person you might be dealing with.

Demonic Possession vs Discernment
It is important to know that not every person who you get bad vibes from is demonic or that they have hidden motives. The gift of discernment is mainly to help followers of God or those willing to commit to God as there needs to be a distinction drawn. A person who is demon possessed would likely be intimidated by a person who carries the light of Jesus Christ.
This is the gift of discernment is different vs demonic possession. For example, if a wicked woman said she felt uncomfortable around another woman who happens to be a christian. That does not mean that there is something off about the christian but the christian woman carries the Holy Spirit which demons can’t stand in the presence of.
This is why when people say they catch a bad vibe about someone, you have to evaluate the person saying it. If the person saying it hates Jesus Christ and they feel uncomfortable around a christian, then that person saying it may be possessed by an evil spirit. If a follower of Christ feels uncomfortable around someone, then that christian may be picking up something that may be off about a person.
Conclusion
The gift of discernment is critical in a world where evil is around us. We see on the news stories or through our own experiences, how deceitful some people are. With statistics like 40 percent of murders in the U.S. go unsolved or even higher in some parts of the world, you sometimes do not know who people truly are.
That guy walking on the street who smiled and said hi he might have committed a homicide decades ago and never been caught. That beautiful woman on instagram might have set a man up to get robbed at gunpoint last week. Discernment is very critical these last days as there are some people walking around with evil spirits inside of them. Stay prayed up and be on alert as Satan is looking to destroy many. God bless.
